I liked it a lot but was a little harsh, naturally I jarred it up , put it away and tried other blends in my quest of tobaccos. I highly recommend it. Sipping at this one, it didn't get too overbearing in its intensity of flavor. Awesome!.. Burns all the way down and leaves the pipe dry and clean. Many tobaccos with half as much bill themselves as "heavy" blends. Made with the Latakia lover in mind, Pirate Kake is a pressed blend from Cornell & Diehl with medium strength and a substantial taste. Barely any sweetness in the blend, and if you do find it, it doesn't stay. Nicotine content is low. Tasting this one as it evolves and reveals more of itself has been very rewarding, especially for a latakiaphile like myself. I always have some with me. Doesnt age well after being opened for long 2 weeks seems to be it and it starts losing its potency. I am very glad I did. This was confirmed by the frequent relights during the first half of the bowl - mea culpa. Perfect moisture content out of the tin for breaking a piece off the cake and stuffing. Rather than overwhelm you it works really well. Earthy, smoky, salty, leathery and full. Pipe Tobacco. Tasty and full , with excellent pack and burn qualities . The smoke is heavy and rich and leaves wherever you are smelling like a campfire. So all in all its a decent no frills smoke. A few puffs into the bowl, the Latakia smooths out a bit and it is just a great smoke. Latakia lovers delight! The bulk of my purchase is going to my cellar for aging, which will mellow out this Latakia bomb. This is a top shelf blend worthy of a try by any latakia lover. Turns out I am. There is no delicate inference of pleasures to be detected but instead, a well balanced presentation of players that compliment each other on a stage of pleasure. Pressed plug, quite compressed, so I'm not sure I'd call it a kake, but still not as dense and fine as a traditional English plug. Mainly because it had to do with pirate. I tend to prefer it more in a condimental sense. I can smoke several bowls in a row and enjoy its very full flavour. This has been the best latakia blend i've smoked so far. It smells very strongly of Latakia in the pouch. Somehow, none of the blends I tried hit the spot, offering only a mere tantalizing hint of the Latakia pungency that I was after. In fact, it isn't fit to be called a blend at all since it is the same as smoking straight latakia, not a blend of different tobaccos. The smoke leans a little further to the sweet than the smokiness, and I can definitely pick up on the Perique and Orientals more than I had anticipated. Yes its filled with Latakia to the brim, but as mentioned by blenders before, Latakia has this kind of event horizon, where if you use enough of it, its less of a lat bomb than blends with less Latakia. I thought the smoke was gonna be the way it smelled, but to my surprise it was a soapy like smooth smoke that had a uniq ue odor without tongue bite. You may even liken this to a creosote and tar aroma. PK smokes smooth and has no bad qualities if you're a latakia junkie. I was able to smoke a bowl of this. So, as an amateur pipe smoker, I have discovered with the help of this blend (and a few others) that I am apparently a Latakia-phile. Update 06/30/18: I can attest that age does this wonders. After just shy of 4 years in the cellar the blend becomes very sweet, round, and displays a number of notes not originally apparent. In addition, although the jarred cubes I had saved became a little dry, moistening them with about a shot's worth of golden rum per half pound will yield a blend that has neither equal nor counterpart. My 6 year old piece had a nice oily sheen to the eye and a few spots of plume. The next day PK lights right up and smokes all the way through. The aftertaste is yummy smokey incensy latakia. I know, "BLASPHEME!" While I didnt pick up any dark chocolate from Pirate Kake, I did indeed find it to be buttery smooth (and slightly sweet, just like them caramels) and I also found it to be delectably salty some (and so the name, Pirate Kake perchance -- the salty)? Recommended. I have not had the need to dry mine out and it smokes exceptionally cooly and dryly. First light I tasted heavy notes of campfire, wood, earth and sulfur. So much so, that I feel its only fair to profess that Pirate Kake has a number of admirable attributes that fellow latakiaphiles will most certainly applaud. A Latakia lover's treasure I rubbed then let dry for an hour or 2. Most likely she won't let you smoke this one inside unless she's smoking it too lol. So much good stuff, you'll want to exercise restraint and reserve its enjoyment for once-on-a-blue-moon situations. Cornell & Diehl Pirate Kake - Having my only taste of Latakia being Plum Pudding and having read so much about what a latakia bomb like Pirate Kake would be like I went in a little intimitaded. It does have, as others have mentioned, quite a punch but is great for when I am in a contemplative mood. I've decided I would rather put my money towards PK. I'm then not particularly surprised that this cake burns nice and cool. Since I've bought it, it did mellow out a little and is now quite a pleasant smoke, but I feel there are a lot of better thought out english/balkan blends to spend my time with.
